Machu Picchu one of the seven wonders of the world is built on a 2,430-metre mountain ridge as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti around 1450 and is located in the Cusco region above the Sacred Valley. The city was abandoned a century later after the spanish conquest but it was not known to the Spanish during the colonial period and later on to the outside world until 1911.
I visited Cusco and Mach pichu in 2018. The footprints of Spanish culture could be seen all over Cusco, while Machu Picchu, surrounded and protected by mountains, has been stayed untouched.
